At his mother’s urging, the author, who later became a world-renowned psychoanalyst, escaped from Nazi-occupied France as a child. He was able to come to the United States. His mother was sent on a transport to Auschwitz.  Parens became an authority on violence in children, drawing on his experiences.

Dr. Parens died in March of 2022.
